A Doctor of Behavioral Health (DBH) is a specialized discipline designed for healthcare professionals who want to lead the integration of behavioral health into medical and community-based settings. This innovative discipline blends advanced training in behavioral science, clinical practice, and healthcare management to address chronic disease, mental health, and substance use in real-world systems of care. The DBH, often called a Behavioral Health Consultant (BHC) uses evidence-based techniques, such as, brief interventions, cognitive-behavioral strategies, motivational interviewing, and health behavior change models, to improve patient outcomes, reduce healthcare costs, and support whole-person care. BHC provide advanced clinical training that enhances diagnostic, therapeutic, and consultative skills, preparing licensed or license-eligible professionals to deliver direct care within integrated healthcare teams. Whether through a clinical or non-clinical lens, BHCs are equipped to transform behavioral health delivery across medical and behavioral health systems.
